News: United States Department of Defense (DoD) Recognizes our Values-Driven Safety Methodology
The Values-Driven Safety Culture Measurement methodology has been distinguished as one of only two safety culture maturity models cited in the Office of Inspector General‘s (OIG) Comparative Analysis of recognized Safety Management Systems.
In 2001, Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld launched an executive assessment of the DoD safety program, challenging senior leaders to reduce the non-combat accident mishap rate by 50 percent within 2 years. The Secretary directed the OIG to develop recommendations on actions needed to achieve this objective.
The OIG partnered with the National Safety Council, to conduct surveys of all military service branches, and gather input from prominent safety experts. The OIG interviewed over 100 senior leaders including the Deputy Secretary of Defense, and gathered input from 317,000 individuals drawn from a pool of 3.5 million DoD military and civilian personnel.
As part of this initiative, the OIG conducted research to identify industry Best Practices and credible Safety Management Systems, which was compiled into a Comparative Analysis tool for use in benchmarking processes, and guiding DoD safety performance improvement strategies. They sought a safety culture measurement system and identified two Culture Maturity Models that they felt were effective. We’re pleased to announce that Values-Driven Safety Culture was one of only two cited models reported by the OIG.
